It’s not easy when you’re moved along Not nice when you’re not wanted And when the wagon’s at the door They’ll keep the flowers you planted I’ll wrap me shoulders in his arms There’s nothing else worth taking They’ve had it all, they broke the charm And now the world is shaking Chorus Oh, what is to become of me I’ve heard of such evictions I know that nothing comes for free But it’s hard with such restrictions You look around, you’re stood apart There’s no familiar faces The fire’s out and so’s your heart Who knows where the next place is I’ll take the young-uns out of here They never did no harm But like their mam they don’t belong We’ll have to leave the dog Chorus Some happy times I hear the voices Ringing round the walls The memories play tricks on me I just laughed at it all The damp went creeping As we were sleeping But the roof blocked out the sky The sun would shine The wind would blow And the clothes would all get dry Chorus It’s hard to leave these wall behind And take a new direction We’ll go some place where folks are kind And not dwell on reflection And if I let my heart-break shout You’d only see my lips move They’ve turned away and cancelled out What every day we live proves Chorus It’s not easy when you’re moved along Not nice when you’re not wanted And when the wagon’s at the door They’ll keep the flowers you planted I’ll wrap me shoulders in his arms There’s nothing else worth taking They’ve had it all, they broke the charm And now the world is shaking

Baby Baby 02:27
Baby baby, baby baby, crying in the night Baby baby, baby baby, Holding on too tight And in the morning I found you gone Without a warning, without a song Oh what to do now, there is no way Nothing to do now, you’ve gone away Baby baby, baby baby, Staring at the sky Baby baby, baby baby, You and me have died The ground has shifted, no going back And empty-handed, it all went black Oh what to do now, an empty pram Nothing to do now, it’s who I am Baby baby, baby baby, Just can’t put it right Baby baby, baby baby, Leaving in the night And in the morning I feel the pain And every morning I let it rain ‘cos without warning, out of the blue My arms remember the feel of you Baby baby, baby baby, Silent in the night Baby baby, baby baby, Holding onto life And in the morning, will you be there Every morning I’m running scared Oh what to do now, there is no way Nothing to do now, you’ve gone away

Forever Amen 02:59
Somebody’s mother and somebody’s dad It’s never forgotten, the children you’ve had Other things can take over and times can get strange But I’m still broken-hearted, some things never change You can try to get over it, under it, round it But you’ll never be free from the moment you found it They’re all made of two, you can see in their ways They wish love had lasted, that it all could have stayed Somebody’s mother and somebody’s dad We’ve all moved along from the lives that we had If we could forgive for what we’ve never had Somebody’s mother and somebody’s dad Chorus And who in the world would want love to break But the feeling’s still there every day when I wake And I can’t make it better ‘cos tears have been shed And dreaming’s for ever and ever Amen We can all count our blessings and settle for less And we do every day, we keep trying, and yet The flowers in the field aren’t a patch on the faces Of those you brought into the world Somebody’s mother and somebody’s dad It’s never forgotten, the children you’ve had Other things can take over and times can get strange But I’m still broken-hearted, some things never change Chorus And who in the world would want love to break But the feeling’s still there every day when I wake And I can’t make it better ‘cos tears have been shed And dreaming’s for ever and ever and ever dreaming’s for ever and ever Amen dreaming’s for ever and ever and ever dreaming’s for ever and ever Amen

There are times when I don’t know There are places I won’t go easily There are rivers running underground And I know soon I’m going down There are times when days are hard There are days when it is worlds away There are moments in your arms When shadows fall and dreams can play Chorus In your arms I hear the guitar play In your arms I find rest from the day In your arms I let the sadness stray Into my dreams In your arms I lay my head with yours In your arms down on this grassy floor In your arms the fire burns down low Into my dreams There are times when I can’t sleep And the cold of darkness pulls too deep There are tears that startle in my eyes It wasn’t love that told you all those lies There are times when I’m alone I watch the people traveling down this road They’ve nothing to their many names but hope And faith in human kindness Chorus In your arms I hear the guitar play In your arms I find rest from the day In your arms I let the sadness stray Into my dreams In your arms I lay my head with yours In your arms down on this grassy floor In your arms the fire burns down low Into my dreams Into my dreams

Heartbreak 03:45
It’s quiet on the water It’s quiet on the sea It’s silent where the hills rise Where the birds used to be And the wind idles and the sun burns Wasting the rain And the people on the skyline Have nothing left to say It’s empty where the rocks shine After the rain It’s empty where the fields glow Cos nobody wants the pain And the landslides on the roadside It can’t hold up anymore And the people are all leaving Cos they can’t win this war It’s lonely on the dance-floor It’s lonely in the street You wonder what it’s all for Where people used to meet And the walls shake around the windows Shattered on the ground It’s a heartbreak, no people To make the world go round It’s quiet on the water It’s quiet in the hills Quiet where the burns run With nothing left to kill And the words burn cos the tides turn And no-one hears the roar As the waves break And hearts break And wait for love no more It’s quiet on the water It’s quiet in the hills Quiet where the burns run With nothing left to kill

Dust on the window sill Dust on the plain Wind blowing weary It all looks the same Big empty space Where the sky hits the ground I have been changed By the world going round I just couldn’t hold it I couldn’t hold on Pieces are missing And my time is gone Dusty old memories Dust in my eyes Grit in my teeth Where the cold words have died Dust on the road now There’s dust on the side I won’t be walking Out dreaming tonight Stars go on shining The moon will be queen But I have been changed By the world I have seen I just couldn’t hold it I couldn’t hold on Pieces are missing And my time is gone Dust on the mantle Where my finger trails Stones in my stomach Where my courage failed All life is lying In dust and decay Why keep on trying To hide it away I should be calling As free as a bird But I keep on falling I can’t hear the words And I just couldn’t hold it I couldn’t hold on Pieces are missing And my time is gone Dust on the stair With the carpet worn through Can’t get my breath As the hammer hits true I just couldn’t hold it I couldn’t hold on Pieces are missing And my time is gone Dust in the sunlight There’s dust in my hair I have been changed By the world and it’s care

Like A Bird 03:17
I waved goodbye to you yesterday I knew it was the end I’m pleased for you upon the road We were always more than friends My heart flutters like a bird And I know she needs to fly For all the cushies in the wood Just leave me in the sky I know that I’m not practical Not useful in this world I make mistakes and fall far short Of every pretty girl But my heart loves, there’s no denying And everything is good And for all the hurting in the world Folks don’t love as they should Chorus But a quiet voice is never heard It saddens me to know it I’m taking off this heavy coat It’s no use now, I’ll throw it I saw you driving out the yard It took my breath away You know I tried, I tried that hard To keep the world at bay But my heart isn’t strong like that And yours can beat them all So like a bird I spread my wings And flew over the wall Da, da, da, da The sun is shining down on me There’s no-one else around And like a bird up in the tree I’m never coming down ‘Cos my heart’s emptied out with care It’s just about worn through And for all the singing ever done This love song was true Chorus But a quiet voice is never heard I’m taking off this heavy coat It’s no use now, I’ll throw it I waved goodbye and now I’m gone Too many tears to cry And like a bird the silent song Must rainbow in the sky A quiet voice is never heard This coat’s too big to wear And like a bird, a woman’s heart Must flutter in the air Da, da, da, da, da

There’s a T-shirt of bleeding hearts And a shirt that I’ve always loved A jumper to keep the cold out The arms used to give me a hug There’s a pile of old socks there, not always in pairs And the table they’re on can go with the chairs There’s a pair of old wellies, of nearly new shoes They’re all full of feelings that have no more use Chorus A closing-down sale, a no more tears day Letting go bits of life that I’ve known A parting company of old friends He just didn’t love me, couldn’t stay ‘til the end There’s a bag just for evenings And green matching earrings And beads that looked nice on my neck And the dress that I’m carrying is the one I got married in You would look nicer in that There are books on the bookshelves, they’ll all have to go They remind me of all the things I’ll never know Chorus There are curtains of various sizes Some are lace to keep everything in Where I’m going the sun might be shining And I won’t need the jacket I’m in There are carpets and hearth-rugs, odd saucers and milk jugs A thing for spaghetti and more, I forget There are ties for your hair and things I’d have shared But they’re all full of feelings that I wouldn’t dare Chorus There are posters and pictures And films that were fixtures And favourite songs I remembered too late Children’s books from my mother, but I’m letting them go Pass them on gently to children you know There are blankets and towels, there’s a spade and some trowels There isn’t a garden left here that can grow Chorus A closing-down sale, a no more tears day Letting go bits of life that I’ve known A parting company of old friends He just didn’t love me, couldn’t stay ‘til the end

There’s a place in the world But it’s silent and watching Others have places of doing and talking And you can’t help the feeling of being alone When you’re out of your depth And you’re so far from home And you wish you were more Better-looking and clever Clothes more expensive And shoes made of leather But there it is standing You can just put your hand in The one that still loves you The way that you are There’s a place in the world But I can’t do the telling It’s a place that I go From the ones who are yelling And I see from their faces They look down on me And I wish I could run But I know they would see So I lift up my chin And I hold myself still I wish they would leave Me alone on this hill But they just won’t stop pushing To shove me around They want to rub my nose Right into the ground There’s a place in the world I retreat into gladly Away from insensitive feet Treading madly Then I’m pleased to be different Not one of the crowd That I’m still in love With my head in the clouds And while they’re still talking And pushing and doing I’ll be away, I’ll be walking and moving And them in their prisons and them and their rules There’s a place in this world for travelling fools There’s a place in the world That’s just under the sky A shelter from rain And inquisitive eyes And I know on the outside I’ve lost what was won But here on the inside There’s still no harm done And you wish you were more Better-looking and clever Clothes more expensive And shoes made of leather But there it is standing You can just put your hand in But there it is standing You can just put your hand in The one that still loves you The one that still loves you The one that still loves you The way that you are

I’m leaving for love, leaving tonight My eyes wide open, I’m somebody’s life Somebody loves me more than his own Now it’s all over, I’m going home I’ve packed up my bags, I’m catching the bus Moving from them and running to us Somebody wants me just as I am And I’ll be there with him just as soon as I can Chorus I’m leaving for love, leaving for life Running for home to be somebody’s wife Leaving for love, leaving for good Still hoping someday it’ll be understood I’m leaving tonight, leaving at last Leaving the hurt to stay in the past There’s no forgiveness outside the law Love will stay with me this side of the door I’m leaving my childhood of safe golden days I’m leaving my mother and wise ancient ways I’ll remember my father, though I won’t see his face I’ll remember it always, I’ll remember this place Chorus I’m leaving for love, leaving for life Running for home to be somebody’s wife Leaving for love, leaving for good Still hoping someday it’ll be understood leaving for love, leaving for love, leaving for love

Let’s have another drink To give me time to think I know I cannot stay much longer And the comfort that we feel Was never here for real And come the light of day we’ll all be gone Chorus ‘Cos they’ve got us all pretending That this world is never-ending And there’s nothing really left worth fighting for And tonight you’ll be me friend Pledge life until the end Let’s have another glass before we go Let’s have another drink By this fire while I think And sit amongst you all to keep me warm It’s not often I’m afraid But I can see the day coming When all the nights and friends and drinks are gone Chorus Let’s have another drink well it makes you think I remember falling in love And everything was changed it could never be the same let’s have another glass before we go Chorus Let’s have another drink now I just don’t want to think there’s nothing to be done to make us stay and the comfort that we feel was never here for real we’ll all be gone come the light of day Chorus Let’s have another drink before we go

about

Every album has a sort of picture connecting it together and for ‘Roadside Dreams’ it is a group of displaced people with much in common sitting around a camp-fire telling stories from their lives. Although many of the songs are written about other people, there is always a personal experience woven into each story. The sleeve was inspired by Ray Bradbury’s ‘The Illustrated Man’ where every tattoo told a tale – the gap between his shoulder-blades is where you read your story
